Firewire

Connect with Firewire

Firewire Cable Firewire is an external wired interface specification as specified by the IEEE 1394 standard. Common names of Firewire include: Firewire, IEEE 1394, iLink, and DV Link; however, Firewire is the most prevalent. In summary, the term "Firewire" is Apple Computer's name for the IEEE 1394 High Speed Serial Bus. All of the above terms each reference the IEEE 1394 standard; however, the name Firewire as given by Apple Computer is the most used named implementation of the standard.

You can find a full line of FireWire cables at http://www.computercableinc.com, including a nice Retractable Firewire Kit and a useful Active Firewire Extension Cable. Computer Cable Inc online has a full line of cabling products at competative online prices.

When searching for Firewire devices, remember that other companies implementations of the IEEE 1394 standard will differ; however, they are all the same so long as the implementation adheres to the IEEE 1394 standard. Commonly you will see the name i.Link, iLink, dvLink, DV Link, DV iLink, and Firewire Link used on Camcorders and camera equipment; they are all Firewire connections. Almost all modern camcorders have included this type of connection since 1995.

The FireWire is one of the fastest peripheral standards ever developed, which makes it great for use with multimedia peripherals such as digital video cameras and other high-speed devices like the latest hard disk drives and printers. FireWire is integrated into Power Macs, iMacs, eMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and the iPod. FireWire ports were also integrated into many other computer products dating back to the Power Macintosh G3 "Blue & White" computers. All these machines include FireWire ports that operate at up to 400 megabits per second and the latest machines include FireWire ports that support 1394b and operate at up to 800 megabits per second. Major manufacturers of multimedia devices have been adopting the FireWire technology, and for good reason. FireWire speeds up the movement of multimedia data and large files and enables easy connection of digital consumer products, including: digital camcorders, digital video tapes, digital video disks, set-top boxes, and music systems -- directly to a personal computer.

If your electronic device does not have a Fire Wire port, there are Fire Wire adapters and Fire Wire Converters available which can convert your camcorder or laptop to a FireWire ready device. Or perhaps you just need to go from a 6-pin to a 4-pin FireWeir connection. There are adapters for this function as well.
