Fiber Cables

Fiber Cables

Fiber Cables Fiber cabling and fiber networks have been available for years. Fiber Cabling offers many advantages, including speed, bandwidth, distance, and resistance to interference. In the early years Fiber Cables were easy to crack and could not endure tight corners; however, fiber cables have changed and improved over the years. Today, fiber cables are very resilient and can endure the tight corner without cracking and breaking. And who can argue that it is not pretty amazing that some 10 billion digital bits can be transmitted per second along an optical fiber link in a commercial network; enough data to carry tens of thousands of telephone calls within hair-thin fibers consisting of two concentric layers of high-purity silica glass in the core and the cladding. Fiber cabling is amazing; think about this: in theory, in the few number of fiber cables that could be held in a human hand you could eaily carry the sum of all types of current data transmissions for the entire planet (estimated on ~100 terabits per second per fiber).

The most "fun" aspect of fiber cabling for me, personally, is the memory of a when I was a little boy and my grandmother had one of those Fiber Optic Lamps popular in the 70's which changes colors and rotated. Thinking back on that lamp, knowing that today the same technology is created high-speed data networks with the same fiber cables.

Fiber cabling is not to prevalent in home or home office (SOHO) use; however, for enterprise backbones or commercial applications Fiber is the way to go for crazy bandwidth and speed. Many large companies which depend on network data speed, minimal latency, and availability rely on fiber cabled networks. From research, inverviews, and trial and error, the only cautionary to using Fiber Cables these days is the terminations, often called fiber couplers, can be difficult until you become acquainted. There are even RJ45 to Fiber Converters available.
